While physical books always need one, Amazon provides a free “ASIN” (Amazon Standard Identification Number) for Kindle eBooks. However, many authors still buy their own ISBN to keep full control of their work across different stores.
If you buy one, keep these tips in mind:
- Where to get it: Visit ISBN.org (Bowker) to apply. It usually takes about a week.
- One per version: If you have a print book and an eBook, each one needs its own unique number.
- Skip the extras: The website will try to sell you “add-on” packages. You don’t need them. Just get the basic number.

Publishing Your eBook
Amazon’s system for eBooks is now called Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). You no longer use the old Digital Text Platform.
- Create an account: Go to the KDP website and sign in with your Amazon account.
- Enter your details: Fill out your tax and banking information so you can get paid.
- Add a title: Click “Create” and enter your book’s title, description, and keywords.
- Upload: Add your manuscript file and your cover image.

Amazon does not take a 75% commission today.

You don’t need to print thousands of books and keep them in your garage. You can use Print on Demand (POD) through KDP. When someone buys a paper book, Amazon prints one copy and ships it for you. They take the printing cost out of the sale, and you keep the rest.

- Audiobooks: Use a site called ACX. It connects you to Audible and iTunes.
- Video: You can upload your videos through Prime Video Direct. This lets people stream your content rather than buying a physical DVD.
Is It Worth It?
It takes about five to ten hours to set everything up. You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars. If you design your own cover and use Amazon’s free ID numbers, your startup cost is zero.
